Following World War II, the planned community of Lakewood was developed.Ben Weingart, Mark Taper, and Louis Boyar, members of the development team, are honored for "altering forever the map of Southern California."[7] From its early phases in the 1930s and 1940s to the postwar 1950s, mass-produced housing witnessed a transition, beginning in late 1949 and ending with the developers' plan finished in 1953.

Parks: Situated close to the intersection of Pioneer Boulevard and Centralia Avenue, Bloomfield Park spans fifteen acres. The park, which was once a county asset, was annexed in 1964.
Center: In 2018, the Burns Community Center underwent renovations to include refurbished facilities, a new elevator, and better disability access after more than 40 years of service.
More: Palms Park, located in east Lakewood, was dedicated in 1978 and includes a community center, ball diamonds and picnic facilities. The city's gymnastics program is currently housed in the expansive Weingart Room at the park. The park is adjacent to Palms Elementary School.
Library: Angelo M. Iacoboni Library was founded in 1954 – the same year that Lakewood officially incorporated as a city. Originally the library was located in the Faculty Shops in Lakewood Center near what was then the City Hall.
